Daniel R. Kostrzebski was born and raised in rural western New York State. The most popular fact about that quiet county is that it has more registered Holsteins than registered voters. The eldest of five children, Dan learned the value of hard work on his family’s small farm. They were taught respect for all in their community, both young and old. Schedules were set by the rising and setting of the sun and dinner bells. His humble, small-town beginnings blossomed into a noteworthy 40 years of military and government service.
While serving in the U.S. Army at satellite locations worldwide, he earned an associate’s degree, a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration, and a Master of Science in Health Services Administration.
While working his way up the enlisted ranks, Dan served in various Military Occupational Skills, including Military Police, Ordinance, and Special Operations, finishing his military career with the infamous 5th Special Forces Group. His extensive training included Airborne School, Pathfinder School, Air Assault School, Ranger School, and Combat Diver School, while attaining professional qualifications as an Army Jumpmaster and Dive Master. Dan’s service in Special Operations took him to the Middle East and East Africa, along with numerous military exercises throughout the U.S.
Dan has a special affinity for the superhero Aquaman, as water operations have been among his favorite tasks. To him, jumping from a plane into the open water is a rush like no other. After retiring from the U.S. Army in 2003, he served as a Federal Air Marshall and with local law enforcement for a few years until taking a job with a defense contractor, where he continues to serve our country.
"Live in such a way that those who know you but do not know God will come to know God because they know you."
My brother Albert and I have had the honor to know Dan for many years. He and I connected through music as high school bandmates — Dan on piano and me on tuba and bass trombone. Al and Dan met in elementary school, graduated high school together in 1981, and remain friends to this day. According to Al, Dan was best known as a good guy with a one-of-a-kind machine-gun laugh that would erupt without warning. Dan was a highly valued team player in sports and well-liked by everyone. We both considered Dan to be one of those special people you never forget.
When my life hit a rough patch a little over ten years ago, I reconnected with Dan. I learned that Dan would reach out to God for guidance and often found that His timing was perfect. Dan was a great source of support during this trying time, and we connected regularly by phone. Over the course of numerous calls, I learned more about his Special Ops service. I was so moved by his amazing stories, I told him, “Dan, we need to tell your story!” His immediate response was to share his story as a witness for God’s glory! Dan wanted to share his testimony of God’s grace upon his family and his life. It’s a story about a soldier, his faith, and how that faith grew in confidence when he did what God guided him to do.
Several years had passed, and while I all but forgot about that conversation, Dan was keeping to his faith in daily devotionals to his family and others shared here in this book. He continues this practice today. Through this daily devotional, Dan shares his life stories — both personal and military. He talks of triumphs over adversity, the consequences of his own life choices, and how through the grace of God he’s been reunited with his entire family. He’s cultivated a unique connection with them through sharing a daily Bible verse coupled with his own hard-earned wisdom.
Thanks for taking this journey with us. Enjoy Opa Dan’s two cents!
